CAS (CREATIVITY, ACTION, SERVICE)
The "heart" of the IB Program
What is CAS?
CAS stands for Creativity, Action, and Service. CAS is a crucial component of the overall IB program as it requires students to take their knowledge of ethics, engage with issues of global importance, and reflect and grow to achieve an international perspective from these meaningful experiences.
What are the CAS requirements?
IB requires that students complete 150 total CAS hours (Hours must be distributed amongst the three strands). Students may begin their hours on the first day of school JUNIOR YEAR and must complete the hours by April 30 of their senior year. The three strands of CAS, which are often interwoven with particular activities, are characterized as follows:
Creativity: Arts and other experiences that involve creative thinking.
Examples:
*Playing a musical instrument
*Creating an artistic piece of work
*Writing a story in a foreign language
[Note: These cannot be done within or for an IB course.]
Action: Physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle.
Examples:
*Playing a sport or participating on an athletic team
*Training for a local 5K or 10K race
*Attending a weekly dance class
Service: An unpaid and voluntary exchange that has a learning benefit for the student.
Examples:
*Volunteering at Enloe Hospital
*Organizing and raising funds for an international relief fund
*Volunteering at a local senior center
*Note: There is a “group project” component where IB students must work together on a long-term project; this can fall under one or more of the three categories. In addition, students are responsible for completing at least 10 international hours, which means participating in activities that contribute to efforts outside of the U.S.
